Happy Veterans Day from all of us at Masterflo Plumbing! Today we’d like to honor all of our veterans by learning a little bit more about this special holiday.
- Veterans Day was once known as Armistice Day. This term comes from an armistice between Germany and the Allied Nations on November 11, 1918. The first Armistice Day was celebrated on November 11, 1919.
- November 11 is a state and federal holiday. Don’t worry- Masterflo is still open today!
- During World War II, Disney made films for each branch of the United States government. 90% of Disney employees worked making propaganda and training videos during WWII.
- Today, there are over 1.6 million female veterans.
- From 1971-1977, Veterans Day was celebrated on the fourth Monday in October. On November 11, 1978, Gerald Ford signed a law changing it back to its original date.
- On November 11, 1921, an American soldier, whose identity was unknown, was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Today his grave is known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and each year on Veterans Day the president (or another high ranking government official) lays a wreath on his tomb.
- Many people confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day. Memorial Day is to honor those who died serving our country, and Veterans Day is to honor all who have served in the military.
- The word “veteran” comes from the old English language and literally means experienced soldier.
- The word veteran was first used in 1789 and was used specifically to refer to a member (or former member) of the military. It has since been used to describe someone who has held any position for a long time.
- California has more US military veterans than any other state.
