Plumbing Emergency Checklist: The First 5 Minutes

In a plumbing emergency, the first few minutes matter most. Staying calm and taking a few quick steps can be the difference between a manageable cleanup and major water damage.

Save this page (or our number) now, so it's ready if you ever need it: (678) 822-7095.

Step 1 — Shut Off The Water

Stop the flow at the source. For a specific fixture (toilet, sink, water heater), turn the shut-off valve right next to it. For anything bigger — a burst pipe or water you can't trace — go straight to your main shut-off valve and turn it off.

Not sure where your main valve is? Read our quick guide: Where Is My Main Water Shut-Off Valve? — then go find yours today, before you need it.

Step 2 — Kill The Power If Needed

Water and electricity are a dangerous mix. If water is near outlets, appliances, or your electrical panel, shut off power to that area at the breaker — but only if you can reach the panel safely and without standing in water. When in doubt, stay clear and call an electrician or 911.

Step 3 — Contain & Protect

Once the water is off, limit the damage:

  • Move furniture, rugs, electronics and valuables away from the water.
  • Use towels, buckets or a wet/dry vac to soak up standing water.
  • Open a low or outdoor faucet to drain pressure and remaining water from the pipes.
  • If it's a sewage backup, keep people and pets away — it's a health hazard.

Step 4 — Call MasterFlo (We're Open 24/7)

With the water off and the area protected, call us at (678) 822-7095. A real person answers day or night. Tell us what happened and what you've done, and we'll head your way — often within a couple of hours across Canton, Jasper and Metro Atlanta.

Step 5 — Document For Insurance

If there's meaningful damage, take photos and videos before and during cleanup, and hold onto them along with any repair receipts. It makes an insurance claim far smoother if you decide to file one.

Common Emergencies This Applies To

These steps work for the plumbing emergencies we get called about most:

  • Burst or frozen pipes
  • Water heater leaks or failures
  • Overflowing or backed-up toilets and drains
  • Sewer line backups
  • Major supply-line or slab leaks

Frequently Asked

What's the very first thing to do in a plumbing emergency?

Shut off the water — either at the fixture's valve or, for anything bigger, at your home's main shut-off valve. Stopping the flow is the single most important step to limit damage.

Should I turn off the electricity too?

If water is near outlets, appliances or your electrical panel, yes — shut off power to that area at the breaker, but only if you can do it safely without standing in water. If not, stay clear and get help.

How fast can MasterFlo get to me?

We're open 24/7 and based in Jasper, so we reach most of Canton and the surrounding area quickly — often within a couple of hours for emergencies. Call (678) 822-7095 any time.

Is a running toilet or small drip an emergency?

Not usually an emergency, but don't ignore it — small leaks waste water and can cause slow damage. Book a regular service call and we'll take care of it.
