Where Is My Main Water Shut-Off Valve?
When a pipe bursts or a fixture won't stop running, the single most valuable thing you can do is shut off your water — fast. Knowing where your main shut-off valve is before an emergency can be the difference between a quick mop-up and thousands of dollars in water damage.
Here's how to find it, how to use it, and what to do next.
The 3 Most Common Places To Look
In most Georgia homes, the main shut-off valve is on the main water line where it enters the house. Start by picturing a straight line from your street meter to your home, then check these spots:
- In a basement or crawlspace — on the wall facing the street, where the line comes through the foundation.
- In the garage — common in slab-built homes, often near the water heater.
- Outside near the meter — some homes have a valve at the meter box by the curb (you may need a meter key to turn it).
Take two minutes today to find yours and show everyone in the house. In a real emergency, you won't want to be hunting for it with water pouring in.
How To Shut The Water Off
There are two common valve types:
- Ball valve (a straight lever handle): turn it a quarter-turn so the handle sits across the pipe. That's off.
- Gate valve (a round wheel handle): turn it clockwise — "righty-tighty" — until it stops. It may take several turns.
After The Water Is Off
Once the main is shut:
- Open a low faucet (like a basement or outdoor tap) to drain pressure and remaining water from the lines.
- If the emergency is your water heater, switch it off too so it doesn't run dry.
- Call a plumber. With the water safely off, you've stopped the damage and bought time to get it fixed right.

Frequently Asked
Which way do I turn the valve to shut the water off?
For a round wheel (gate) valve, turn clockwise (right) until it stops. For a lever (ball) valve, turn it a quarter-turn so the handle is crosswise to the pipe.
I found a valve outside at the meter — should I use that one?
You can, but the valve at the meter is the utility's and sometimes needs a special meter key. It's usually easier to use the main shut-off inside where the line enters your home. Knowing both is ideal.
My shut-off valve won't turn. What now?
Don't force it — older gate valves can break. Shut off at the meter if you can, and call MasterFlo. A seized main valve should be replaced so it works when you need it.
Do I need to turn off my water heater too?
If the water heater is involved, or if you'll have the water off for a while, yes — switch it off so it doesn't heat an empty or draining tank.
